Edvard Munch was one of Modernism's most significant artists. He was active throughout more than sixty years; from the time he made his debut in the 1880s, right up to his death in 1944. Munch was part of the Symbolist movement in the 1890s, and a pioneer of expressionist art from the beginning of the 1900s onward. His tenacious experimentation within painting, graphic art, drawing, sculpture, photo and film has given him a unique position in Norwegian as well as international art history.
The new Munch Museum will soon open its doors in Oslo, Norway. The employees move from the premises on Tøyen, into 13 floors of masonry and concrete in Bjørvika. The Munch Museum takes its staff seriously, and is committed to create a good transition phase.
We were asked to make an informational film to be used at an internal kickoff for all Munch employees. They wanted to express the great everyday life that awaits them in the new museum. The goal was to convey the museum's vision – as they now want to make Munch even more known internationally.
The visuals represents an abstract universe, open for interpretation and imagination. We wanted to create momentum and curiosity, to engage the employees in the process of moving. The film had to be visualized in a standalone identity, but still feel recognizable and inspiring. Gymnopédie No.1 by Erik Satie became a relevant choice for the soundtrack. The soundscape should be perceived as abstract, experimental, and evocative – without imposing a mood on the viewer.
The elements in the toolbox effectively convey the story of where we come from and what we are moving towards.
